Not a good re-start..jpg

Brian Leetch Night @ MSG

A Momentous Victory!.jpg
Rangers 2 Thrashers 1 OT/SO
YAY!!
The New York Rangers retired defenseman Brian Leetch's number 2 last night in a ceremony before the game against Atlanta. So nice to see the Blueshirts come through in a big way on a big night at The World's Most Famous Arena. Michal Rozsival scored the tying goal in the 3rd, and after a scoreless overtime, Brendan Shanahan scored the only goal in the shootout. yay!

During his speech, Brian let it be known that winger Adam Graves would be the next ex-Ranger to be honored in this way. You're next, Gravy!:

Nice collection of former Ranger greats: (Rod Gilbert, Ed Giacomin, Mike Richter and Mark Messier)

And just because I can, here's the greatest American-born defenseman in the history of the NHL in action:
Leetchie, long ago.jpeg

As Messier put it it, “Words cannot describe what Brian has meant to me, the teammates he has played with and the fans of the New York Rangers for the past 18, 19 years,” Messier said. “Brian is the benchmark of what it means to be a New York Ranger.”
amen.

Thanks, I needed that!

A Severe Thrashing!.jpg
Rangers 4 Thrashers 0
YAY!!
This is the way it's supposed to go, total domination in shots (39-14) scoring chances and duh, GOALS.
Coach Renney shuffled up the lines and, for a game at least, the new combinations seemed to work. Avery, Dubinsky, Strak and Jagr scored the goals. King Henrik didn't let any Atlanta shots get behind him, and I slept like a baby.
Now do it again on Thursday!

Bad News Bruins.jpg
Bruins 3 Rangers 1
guh. The boys actually played well, outshooting the B's and controlling play for 2 periods. Alas, it was not enough. I'm very, very sad about my team.
A Bear-able Loss.jpeg
Bruins 4 Rangers 3 OT/SO
guh. Well, 1 point for the home and home with Boston is better than nothing, but let's face it, if the Blueshirts don't start playing winning hockey soon, all the excitement about free agent signings and a quick start will go the way of our economy- into the crapper...

Weird scheduling this week for the NYR; 2 home games in a row against the Atlanta Thrashers, before the All-Star break. That's something you might routinely find in the minor leagues, (Houston Aeros do this kind of thing a few times a season) but I don't recall ever seeing it happen in the NHL. huh.

Shine without the 'Stars'

Third Line's the Charm!.jpeg
Rangers 2 Sabres 1 (sorry, Ben!)
YAY!!
A win is a win; not the long overdue offensive outburst, but a couple of goals from the third line of Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes and Brandon Dubinsky. Henrik Lundqvist survived another night of man-down situations, with help from the Blueshirt penalty killers.
Ok, I'll take it!

pittspuke.

Got Malkin?.jpg
Penguins 4 Rangers 1
guh. After a pleasant spasm of winning fun at the expense of Montreal, the New York sought to build on that bit of success in Pittsburgh...
Well, so much for that idea. Evgeni Malkin scored a hat trick- (on hat giveaway night at the Mellon Arena, so you can imagine the mess after his 3rd goal; lots and lots of hats on the ice) Sid 'the kid' Crosby assisted on 2 of those goals, and blew through the Ranger defense several times.
The NYR defenseman seemed to be a bit on the slow side, I think what the team is missing is someone like Brian Leetch:

The boys could really use a guy like Leetchie. *sigh*

The Nightmare is Over.

If Jagr's happy, then I'm happy!.jpeg
Rangers 4 Canadiens 1
YAY!!
The Blueshirts took their frustration out on Les Habitants, dominating from start to finish. After grabbing an early 2-0 lead, the Rangers didn't fritter it away as they had against the Flyers the other night; this time they held on, even surviving a couple of 5-on-3 situations.
New York took their defense seriously, check it out:
Hey #46, you're Surrounded!.jpeg
So, living dangerously- but emerging victorious. Thanks, boys, I needed that.

UNPRINTABLE. (insert bad words here)

I think I'm gonna puke..jpg
Flyers 6 Rangers 2
guh. How to turn a 2-0 lead into a humiliating defeat? Play no defense, get no production from the top 2 lines. The Rangers are now on the outside looking in, as far as the standings are considered. This is how it feels to drop out of contention:

5 losses in a row, after the delusional 3 game win streak. I don't know what to say, except FRAK!

No MSG Magic.jpg
Lightning 5 Rangers 3
guh.
Once again, the Blueshirts spotted the opposition a big lead, clawed back with great effort, only to lose in the end. These pretzels are making me thirsty!!!
To make matters worse, Straka and Avery are out again with injuries. FRAK!

A trip to forget.

Rangers squeak a point from the Oilers..jpg
Oilers 3 Rangers 2 OT/SO
guh.
Well the Boys managed to salvage 1 point on the west coast trip, but just barely; Chris Drury scored the tying goal with just 7 seconds left in the 3rd. No scoring in overtime, so the teams went to the shootout. Henrik Lundqvist gave up a goal to some 18 year old punk (Sam Gagner, son of former Rangers player Dave Gagner) and his teammates could not match that shootout success.
The Blueshirts return to MSG Tuesday to face the Lightning. C'mon boys, we're letting this thing slip away...

Robert-o-no.

No luck against the Canucks.jpg
Canucks 3 Rangers 1
guh. Roberto Luongo didn't give visiting New York a sniff of the net, notching his 6th shutout in goal for Vancouver. Scott Gomez' 13 game point streak came to an end, and the Rangers are 0-2 on the west coast trip. guh. Losing sucks.

Jaromir good, Jarome gooder.

Flame-out.jpg
Flames 4 Rangers 3
guh.
New York began a 3 game swing through the west coast with a good effort against Calgary, twice battling back from 2-goal deficits to keep the game close, but the 2 goals by Flames' superstar Jarome Iginla offset the 2 assist effort by Jaromir Jagr.
Jaromir vs. Jarome.jpeg
On to Vancouver...
