No Teeth? No Problem!

Captain Leaves Teeth, Leads Team To Victory!.jpg
Rangers 3 Lightning 1
YAY!!!
After the wimpy offensive showing against Toronto, Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan sat in the dressing room for a couple of hours trying to figure out the problems with the NYR offense. Coach Renney canceled the team's day off, and worked the boys like dogs.
Voila! The Ranger 'power-play' had some power last night against visiting Tampa Bay.
Nigel Dawes gave the Blueshirts a 1st period lead (assists to Mara & Shanahan) and that was it for Ranger scoring until the 3rd. Henrik Lundqvist was a stingy goalie, allowing only a 2nd period goal to Vincent Lecavalier on a very questionably called penalty shot.
Jagr had a very eventful game, showing leadership on defense (getting 3 teeth knocked out by a weird bounce of the puck) and scoring the game winner on a one-timer from the point. (a beautiful cross-ice pass from Michal Rozsival) Jaromir initiated another PP goal with a rush around the Tamp net, passing out front to Chris Drury, who slid the biscuit across the slot to Shanahan who put it into the basket. It's A Power-Play Goal!!
[I scoured the Intronets in vain for a photo of Our Mighty Captain with the 3 missing teeth. You'll just have to catch the espn highlight reel, and check out this from AP:
"Broken skate, broken glove, broken teeth. What a night," Jagr said. "Break my skate, first period. Second, my glove. Then my teeth. It's Halloween tomorrow. I don't have to buy a mask."]

Excuse me while I go wash out my mouth with soap.

Back to the Drawing Board.jpg
Maple Leafs 4 Rangers 1
guh. My happy-happy-joy-joy of the 1 game winning streak has turned into a stinking pile of dren.
*sigh* Despite this loss, and the early season malaise, I shall still proudly wear my raggedy-ass-faded-stretched-out NYR t-shirt with pride.

We're Only Clapping Hands For NIGEL!!*

More winning, Please!.jpg
Rangers 2 Devils 0
YAY!!!
Oh winning is so much better than losing! Henrik Lundqvist didn't need to be perfect on Thursday night, but he was, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. The boys were solid on defense (really, the Blueshirts have been very good that way thus far, allowing only 17 goals against. But only 15 goals for, which explains the losing record, guh.)
Here in this photo by Barton Silverman we see young Nigel (left) celebrating the 1st of his 2 goals, at 57 seconds into the game. (click the pic, to enlarge)
Nigel Dawes gets 2!.jpg
So New York gets just enough offense from the rookie, and the homestand is off to a very nice start.

Henrik Needs Help!

No Help For Henrik (again).jpg
Penguins 1 Rangers 0
guh. Once again, the boys frelled away a near-perfect performance by goalie Henrik Lundqvist (21 of 22 saved, including a penalty shot) and provided no goals. (36 shots, a shutout for Pittpuke's Marc-André Fleury)
Dubious stat of the night: The back-to-back 1-0 shutouts are the first in Ranger history. If you're gonna lose, might as well make history, right?
Six game homestand starting Thursday night at The World's Most Famous Arena. Ok, let's get serious now...

Beantown, or the road to Patsyville?

Now Approaching Patsy-ville.jpg
Bruins 1 Rangers 0 (SO)
guh. The visiting Rangers salvaged a point in the standings for forcing the game into overtime, and then the shootout. But Henrik, while great, was not perfect. The boys need to provide him some offensive support, or it's going to be a long year for our brave goalie.
More bad news: Martin Straka broke a finger while blocking a slap shot of the stick of Boston's Zdeno Chara. ow.

Fractional effort.

one-sixth is not enough..jpg
Thrashers 5 Rangers 3
guh. I am way too tired from my gig last night to spend a lot of time on this one. New York spotted the ATL a big lead, and then scored 3 goals in the final ten minutes (Shanahan, Gomez and Girardi). The outburst was nice, but we were looking to the previously 0-6 Thrashers to be our 'get-well' medicine. C'mon, boys, you gotta play a full game, even against the patsies. And by the way, at 2-4, you're pretty close to achieving patsy status yourselves. =(

Fifty-Two Seconds...

A Costly Catnap.jpg
Senators 3 Rangers 1
guh. Another Saturday night, another loss to Ottawa. The Blueshirts played a tight defensive game for the first period and a half, including some of the usual Henrik Lundqvist awesomeness (31 saves) we Ranger fans have grown to know and love. Unfortunately, New York seemed to have some sort of mental lapse midway throught the 2nd period, allowing the Sens to score 3 goals in 52 seconds. wtf?!
FYI: if the opposition scores again -and AGAIN! - before the public address announcer has finished his spiel from the prior goals, this would indicate that your team is frakking up.
Ottawa's Martin Gerber (1st star-36 saves) nearly had the shutout, but Jaromir Jagr manged to poke in a puck very late in the 3rd period to spoil an otherwise flawless night for the Senators. Jagr's 1st goal of the season was also his 100th as a Ranger *muted yay*. The boys have 4 days to think about this one before playing the Thrashers in Atlanta on Thursday.

The Power Is On!

Thanks for the help, Captain!.jpg
Rangers 3 Capitals 1
YAY!!! Lots of good signs here: The Blueshirts scored their first power play goals of the young season, making good on 3 man-advantage situations. Scott Gomez scored his first of the season, (see photo below) Jaromir Jagr assisted on every goal.
First of many, I hope!.jpg
Another fine performance by Henrik Lundqvist in net, stopping 24 of 25 shots. Meanwhile, New York put 41 shots on Olaf (Olie the Goalie) Kolzig.
In addition to the Gomez goal, Martin Straka and Michal Rozsival also scored. Big effort boys, lemme see you do it again tonight against the Senators; a little payback for last Saturday in Ottawa.

The Fishsticks changed their uniforms. *shrugs*

I'm not in the mood for fishsticks!.jpg
Islanders 2 Rangers 1
guh. As in Ottawa on Saturday, goals were again hard to come by. The Rangers lone goal was scored by defenseman Fedor Tyutin.
If we're looking for an upside, the visiting Rangers did get 37 shots on Rick DiPietro, and had a bunch of attempts blocked by Isles' players.
Dejection, already..jpeg
(Nice capture of the way I feel, Barton Silverman)
Gonna need some of the high-priced talent to break through in the scoring department; no tallies yet for either Jaromir Jagr or Scott Gomez.
C'mon boys, Let's Go Ranguhs!!

Road trip bummer.

Couldn't Buy A Goal.jpg
Senators 2 Rangers 0
guh.
Obviously it's gonna take more than just Henrik Lundqvist (31 saves) being awesome for the Rangers to be successful this season; the boys will have to score, at least a little bit. Two 1st period goals were plenty for Ottawa, as Martin Gerber (35 saves) and the Sens frustrated visiting New York the entire game. guh. Lots of shots, but no biscuit in the basket.
Well, we weren't expecting to go 82-0...

Game On!! (NYR 2007-08 Season Begins)

Boys_Begin_with_Big_Win!!.jpg
Rangers 5 Panthers 2
YAY!!!
The New York Rangers came to life in the 3rd period last night to overwhelm the visiting Florida Panthers. The fans had barely settled back into their seats after the player introductions, when defenseman Michal Rozsival scored 37 seconds into the game. (see top photo)
Chris Drury made his debut for the Blueshirts in a big way, the game's 1st star with 3 points. (a goal and 2 assists) It was only a few months ago that Drury, the former Buffalo Sabre co-captain, was crushing the Rangers' playoff hopes. It's a new season, eh?
Chris Drury 3 points 1st star.jpeg
Gomez centered the second line of superstar Brendan Shanahan and super-pest Sean Avery. "I was just hoping that I wouldn't fall," said Gomez of his first introduction to the Garden Faithful. "I have been on that side (visitors' side of the ice) enough to know that there is a little lift there. That's definitely New York for you. It is an awesome experience, and I am just glad that we could get (a win) for them tonight."
Scotty Gomez' Garden debut.jpeg
What else? 2 assists for Captain Jaromir Jagr, 3 helpers for Garden whipping boy Marek Malik (fans stopped booing him, temporarily at least, to chant 'Marek! Marek!')
Henrik Lundqvist helped the boys survive a lackluster periods 1 and 2, and drew his usual ovations. 'Henrik! Henrik!'. Petr Prucha scored, Martin Straka and Ryan Callahan did as well. Production from 3 lines + defense = yay.
Nice way to start the season, me-so-happy!

Hockey's Back!!

These things have a way of sneaking up on me! Anyway, the season started this past weekend, with 2 games in England. (talk about a road trip!) The Los Angeles Kings split with the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks.

My team, the New York Rangers, begin their regular season on October 4th against The Florida Panthers. Once again I shall attempt to follow their progress, glomming photos from the web, and offering my bitter or ecstatic observations. (This will be my 3rd season, no Cup yet; hope springs eternal)

LET'S My Family Crest GO My Family Crest RANGERS!

So YAY, Hockey's back!
